Smashbox In Bloom Eye Palette.

I realize that I possibly have every shade of eye shadow - or close enough, made to man. If I look hard enough, I am sure I have similar colors to these in the beautiful spring wardrobe of eye shadows from Smashbox. But that is not the point. The point is that I am beauty obsessed, live by the motto that I can never have enough makeup, and the fact that these shades are gorgeous and I know will look great on me, makes me want it all the more.

This Smashbox In Bloom Eye Palette features ten beautiful eye shadow shades of both soft shimmers and soft mattes. They are even arranged vertically in duo's, but like me, you can mix them and match them, and create whatever eye look you wish with these beauties. Never mind the fact that having all of these in one palette will make my spring travelling much easier.

The palette comes with a nice fluffy shadow brush, which really is a bonus when it comes to shadow palettes. It is selling for $48 at Sephora, department stores and over on Smashbox.com.

Some Acne History For Ya!

Thought it would be cool to read up on a little bit of Acne history, read this article real quick from: articlealley.com, it?s interesting!

Acne is known to affect people even before humans could write. Some Egypt writings mention that Pharaohs used to suffer with Acne. It seems that the word ?Acne? was invented in ancient Greece as people from there were also affected by this disorder.

Here are some of the ways people used to treat Acne depending on the period they lived in:

In ancient Rome, Acne was treated with baths. They used hot mineral water, combined with sulfur. Celsius on of the writers of Rome mentioned of this treatment in the book called ?De Medicina?.

Until 1800, the people did not discover any more useful treatments against Acne and have continuously used sulfur as they saw it can dry and exfoliate the skin.

In 1920, people began to use Benzoyl Peroxide which is still used nowadays. We can find it in the composition of the anti-Acne cream called ?Brevoxyl? in a concentration of 4%.

In 1930, Laxatives were being used for treating the affection called ?Chastity pustules?. People thought that virgins could not eliminate toxins from their body as they did not have any sexual contact so they generally used laxatives against Acne. Still, they were not far from the truth as nowadays doctors know that constipation can be a cause of Acne as toxins accumulate in the body but sex has nothing to do with eliminating toxins.

In 1950, antibiotics were finally used in treating Acne caused by germs. Most of all, tetracycline was used with great results, but nowadays it is no longer used as it has lost her effect against some skin germs and her place was taken by more powerful antibiotics.

1960 is the year when ?Tretionine?, also known as ?Retin A? was discovered to have a benefic effect against Acne. Later on the oral Isotretionine was made and the battle against Acne became easier. These products are still used nowadays with the same great effects on Acne. They are mostly used by US people.

In 1980, a famous anti-Acne product called ?Accutane? appeared in the American market. Its results on an Acne skin are astonishing and that is why it is still used in 2007.

In 1990, Laser Therapy made its first steps in treating Acne and now it has perfected in such a way that it does not only cure Acne but it can clear the skin from recent and even old scars left by Acne. Of course the process if quite expensive but the result of laser therapy is a perfectly normal skin which all people suffering of Acne are dreaming of. Further more, it does not hurt at all and you are not obliged to hide in the house for a few days as you have to do after chemical peeling procedures.

In 2000, the blue/red therapy has developed along with laser therapy and Acne can be treated easily.

Seeing what our ancestors did to cure Acne shows us how the humanity has evolved and also makes people suffering of Acne hope, that in a few years they will not have to deal with this infection any more.

Everything else is going alright, I?ll update you on the Accutane in a couple of days.

Squamous Cell Cancer - Multiple Keratoacanthomas

Multiple Keratoacanthomas, also called Ferguson-Smith Type of Multiple Self-Healing Keratoacanthomas, are identical clinically and histologically with the Solitary Keratoacanthoma type and I occasionally encounter the Multiple Keratoacanthomas in my The Woodlands dermatology and Conroe dermatology offices.  Multiple Keratoacanthomas are usually hereditary and originated in two large Scottish families.  Patients begin developing Multiple Keratoacanthomas in their 20's and usually three to ten Keratocacanthomas arise at once.  Sun exposed areas such as the face, neck, and arms are the most common sites affected.  Additionally, patients with Multiple Keratoacanthomas can develop the lesions at sites of trauma.  The Keratoacanthomas typically involute leaving a depressed scar, but early treatment with excision is usually curative and the incision scar more aesthetically pleasing.

Quick Update

Hope everyone had a good weekend, and that you are all enjoying your summer. I just wanted to update everyone on a few things like Accutane. It?s funny because I swear that after I wrote that Accutane Update Day 45 entry that I started to breakout. It is a little alarming because they?re coming in big and in pairs almost, and not only that but because Accutane makes your skin sensitive it hurts super bad to even try and pop them. So I don?t know if this is normal or if my body is getting used to the medication and I need to be brought up to a higher dose. Either way my next appointment with my dermatologist is this Wednesday, and I know he will be able to answer my questions and hopefully bring me back peace of mind. So when Wednesday comes I?ll let you know what he says, but in the meantime don?t forget to be drinking plenty of water during this time of year especially if you have acne. You need plenty of water during this time of year even if you don?t feel thirsty, because your body is using more of that water and sweating it out as well. Although you might not be drenched in sweat all the time your body actually is perspiring (sweating) a lot more.

So like I said I?ll let you guys know what my derm says on Wednesday; in the meantime though check this video out! It?s not Acne related, but it?s just so damn gnarly that I had to share!

Open Letter to Bill Belichick

Dear Mr. Belichick,

You've assembled yourself quite a football team.  Hall Of Fame quarterback, impenetrable offensive line, scary-good corp of receivers.  And while the defense keeps turning over, they just seem to be getting better.  Barring something crazy happening this year, it's hard not to view New England as the probable AFC representatives in this season's Super Bowl.

That's kind of why I'm writing to you.  I need to ask you a favor.

You have an insanely easy matchup tonight against the Buffalo Bills.  If you wanted to, you could probably outscore Buffalo by 40 points.  It'd be a great opportunity for you to make a statement and let the rest of the league know that you have your QB again, and the NFL is on notice.  Really seize the opportunity to strike fear in the hearts of your prospective opponents.

But, on behalf of Buffalo Bills fans everywhere, I have to ask you to do just the opposite of that.

Remember after Katrina hit New Orleans, how the rest of the nation stood up to help their countrymen in need?  It didn't matter if you lived on the East or West Coast; across the nation, citizens chipped in to ease the suffering any way they could.  This could be your moment.

I don't want to equate Western New York with a city suffering a major natural disaster.  Clearly a down-trodden, economically ruined Buffalo isn't on par with the situation New Orleans suffered through.  Just the same, it's a pretty sad, depressed area.  The people of Buffalo have nothing going for them outside of the laughable hope that the Bills or Sabres might finally bring home a trophy.

That surely isn't happening this season (at least for the Bills).  But for one night, one Monday Night, you could single-handedly give the millions of die-hard Bills fans just a glimmer of hope.

I'm not asking you to throw the game, but would you mind throwing the game?

Imagine Tuesday morning in Buffalo, after the upstart Bills, lead by weak-armed Trent Edwards and lame-duck Dick Jauron knock off the mighty Patriots.  The sun would shine on the abandoned factories, Neil Diamond songs would rain from the Heavens, and Buffalonians everywhere would smile.

You have that power, Mr. Belichick.  The power to raise the spirits of half the State of New York.

Buffalo will be lucky to win 6 games this season.  You know this, and I know this.  The Bills are the personification of Buffalonians.  They just don't have a whole lot going for them right now, and are just a few months away from having to trudge through another freezing, snow-laden winter.

If you have a heart, let them have tonight.  You can run the table the rest of the season.  You're probably going to anyway.  Is that one loss really going to matter when you're hoisting the Lombardi Trophy come February?  I doubt it.

But that one win would mean a whole lot to the people of Buffalo.

What say you, Bill?  Can you throw us a freakin' bone?

Signed,

Buffalo Bills Fans Everywhere

Basal Cell Cancer - Radiation Therapy

Radiation Therapy is a treatment modality that works very well in the treatment of carefully selected Basal Cell Cancers and I recommend this method for some of my patients in both my The Woodlands dermatology and Conroe dermatology offices.  Radiation Therapy is a good treatment alternative for patients with Basal Cell Cancers who do not desire surgery.  It can also be used for Basal Cell Cancers that have been excised but the surgical margins are still positive and the patient does not desire a re-excision.  Basal Cell Cancers which are nodular respond much better to Radiation Therapy than those that are deeply infiltrative.  Radiation Therapy is provided by a Radiation Oncologist, which is a medical doctor who has at least four years of rigorous residency training in Radiation Oncology.  The Radiation Oncologist will determine the total amount of radiation necessary to cure the Basal Cell Cancer depending on the size and location of the cancer.  In order to limit radiation side effects which include burning, redness, pain, skin breakdown to name a few, the Radiation Oncologist divides the total dose of radiation into fractions over several weeks to more then a month.  Typically, a patient receives radiation daily Monday through Friday in very small doses at each visit, which lasts approximately ten minutes.  The cure rate for treating Basal Cell Cancers with Radiation Therapy is approximately 90% but depends on the size, histopathology, and location of the cancer.  The cosmetic result is usually very good.  After a patient has completed Radiation Therapy, the treated area is examined by a board certified dermatologist every 3-6 months to evaluate for recurrence of the cancer as well as to detect new skin cancers that can be induced by the Radiation Therapy.

Video Debut: Taylor Swift?s ?Back To December?

VH1 TV Shows | Music Videos | Celebrity Photos | News & Gossip

There has been widespread speculation in the media that “Back To December,” the second single of Taylor Swift’s triple platinum Speak Now album, is about her failed relationship with Twilight hunk Taylor Lautner. Regardless of that rumor’s veracity, it’s pretty clear from both the song and the new video — directed by Yoann Lemoine, who also shot Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” — that Taylor is super bummed about something.
The song, which peaked at #6 on the Billboard 100, is almost certainly the most maudlin of Swift’s young career, and the video does everything it can to match that sensibility. It begins with a chisel-cheeked young man wandering around the desolate, snow covered grounds of his high school in a depressed state; he sits on the bleachers with his head in his hands and mournfully kicks at the snow. He’s so depressed, in fact, that he forgets to wear a hat. That’s a surefire way to catch a cold, mister!

Meanwhile, Taylor is acting similarly downbeat, only she has the common sense to stay in her warm (and pretty spacious) home. However, despite her temperature controlled environs, she can’t escape the haunting memories of the way she treated the song’s subject and it begins snowing right there in her bedroom and kitchen. That’s when the “Back To December” metaphor turns literal, with romantic angst manifesting itself as soap flakes snow falling indoors. It’s a smidge on the heavy handed side and, in an unfortunate twist, doesn’t seem to represent that Taylor is going “Back To December.” Rather, it seems as if she’s stuck in December, which seems to us like a pretty silly mental state for a 21 year-old multimillionaire to find herself. Here’s hoping that spring comes sooner rather than later for her.
If you’d like to watch this video on something other than your computer monitor, be sure to tune into VH1’s Top 20 Video Countdown this weekend!

Basal Cell Cancer - Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery involves the treatment of Basal Cell Cancers using liquid nitrogen to destroy the Basal Cell Cancer by "freezing" it and I do not use this technique in my The Woodlands dermatology and Conroe dermatology clinics.  It is considered a rather historic method for treating Basal Cell Cancers as there are many more effective treatment options which have higher cure rates and better cosmetic outcomes.  When cryosurgery is performed on a Basal Cell Cancer, a temperature probe must be inserted into the skin below the Basal Cell Cancer to ensure that a temperature of -50 to -60 degree Celcius is achieved.  Typically, the Basal Cell Cancer must be anesthetized with lideocaine prior to inserting a temperature probe.  Two 30 second freeze-thaw cycles are usually employed with a 3-5mm margin of normal skin treated as the cryosurgery margins.  Cryosurgery should be reserved only for superficial basal cell cancers that are small and well defined.  After treatment with cryosurgery, the skin develops a blister and becomes necrotic with a black eschar/scab.  Over 2-3 weeks, the wound heals with a white circular scar.  The cure rate for cryosurgery is approximately 90-95% in carefully selected Basal Cell Cancers.

Can Masturbating Cause Acne?

Almost everyone does it (whether or not they?ll ever admit it.), some more than others especially if you?re a teenager/young adult going through puberty or with raging hormones. This is another one of the acne topics that has mixed speculation. I hear or read from people and even professionals that masturbating in any way or form can?t cause acne, but there is also a flip-side where they say that it does. So like everything with acne it comes down to you and your personal experiences. One thing that is for known for sure is masturbation can help relieve anxiety and stress and that it can be healthy in ways!

Check out this article I found from acne.org.

?Does masturbation cause acne?

History: There is no specific scientific evidence linking masturbation and acne. However, for hundreds if not thousands of years, societies around the world, in their attempt to prevent young people from engaging in premarital sex, have latched onto the myth that sex/masturbation and acne are in some way related. Let?s take a moment now to look at modern science and see if we can help unravel this controversy.

What does research say?: As of 2009, there are no published studies attempting to link masturbation or sex with acne. Until researchers produce those studies, let?s take a step back. We do know that hormones and acne are linked, particularly when it comes to increased levels of androgens such as testosterone. So let?s look at how arousal and the sex act affect hormone levels. First, it?s worth mentioning that we know far more on this topic when it comes to animals such as rats and monkeys than we do about humans. Science is spotty in the area of human hormonal production and sex. According to a study in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, ??small differences in methodology and data interpretation may easily produce contrasting results.? A survey of the evidence bears this out.

What the evidence shows: Several studies show very small increases in testosterone after orgasm in both men and women, while others show statistically insignificant differences. Studies specific to arousal show from very small increases in hormone levels to insignificant changes. However, even when changes are apparent, levels return back to baseline within minutes. As you can see, we have little if any compelling evidence. To complicate matters even more, a study in the Journal of Zhejiang University SCIENCE in 2003 showed a marked increase in testosterone on the 7th day of abstinence, which the authors posit is possibly due to sperm formation and maturation.

Conclusion: We simply do not know whether masturbation or sex is related to acne, or for that matter human hormonal balance. More research is needed. Current research tends to point toward very small hormonal changes after arousal or sex, if any. Whether these changes are beneficial or detrimental for acne remains unknown.

My common sense hypothesis: We know that humans with high androgen levels tend to experience more severe acne symptoms. We also know that humans with higher androgen levels tend to have a higher sex drive. This may explain why some people who are more sexually active, with themselves or partners, may at times experience more acne symptoms. Whether abstinence would increase or decrease acne in such individuals is up for debate.?

So whether you do it 20 times a day (that?s gotta hurt!) or once a week, or even less, it all comes down to how your acne/skin reacts!

Get to Know the DG Staff: Our Favorite Holiday Traditions

You told us what your favorite holiday traditions were, so we figured it was only fair to share ours! Get to know the DG staff a little better as we share some of our favorite traditions with you:

Gina Pappas - Administrative Assistant

My favorite holiday tradition would have to be cutting down our Christmas tree. It started because my dad is so picky about what kind of tree we have. Every year we venture out into the woods until we find the perfect tree. We bring along a thermos of hot chocolate and our snowshoes. I no longer live at home, or live in a place with snow, so it’s kind of difficult to continue this tradition, but it’s definitely my favorite from my childhood.

Sapna Protheroe - Advertising Assistant

A holiday tradition I have with my family is to go and see all the Christmas lights around our neighborhood. After we have our meal together, all of us get into our cars and drive around to see the beautiful decorations and lights our neighbors have up. It is my favorite because we are able to see how much other people enjoy the holidays and it makes everyone feel closer.

Alex Saymo - Production Manager

One of my favorite holiday traditions comes from back home on Guam and it is building a nativity scene in your home. During the Christmas season, islanders would go into the nearby jungles and gather the deep green moss. Using a combination of cinder blocks and wood, a foundation is formed and then covered fully with the jungle moss. Upon the moss, a nativity scene is placed and illuminated! We call this a Belen.

Caroline Ruse - Graphic Designer

My favorite holiday tradition is watching A Christmas Story on Christmas Eve. They play it nonstop for 24 hours on TBS every single year. I usually end up watching it multiple times during that period, but I never, ever get tired of it. It simply isn't Christmas until I watch that movie.

Ashley Degree- National Advertising Representative

In my family, we all get to open one present from my parents on Christmas Eve...and it's always new pajamas! My parents started this tradition when we were babies so we would look super cute in all the Christmas morning photos. And trust me, my parents take a million photos!

Krista Jones - Staff Intern

My holiday family tradition is every year on Christmas Eve my dad gets what we call “Christmas Pizza.” It’s cheese pizza with uncooked green peppers and tomatoes. It’s green and red and looks just like Christmas. This tradition started when I was little because my dad is not the best cook and my sister and I always preferred pizza so one year my dad surprised us with “Christmas Pizza” and since then we’ve had it every year!

Sarah Verney - Editorial Director

We always have a treasure hunt on Christmas to find at least one of the presents. It started when one of my kids received a gift that was too big and awkward to wrap (like a bike) so we hid it and made that person search for it by reading and following clues around the house. It adds a little extra excitement to Christmas morning!

Tatiana Guertin - Marketing Assistant

My favorite tradition is actually the same as Ashley’s, except my parents always give us our pajamas on Christmas morning! Our pajamas are always the first gift we open up, then we run into our rooms and change into them so we’re all very comfy – and cute – in our Christmas photos! Our family’s grown throughout the years so now it’s a huge pajama-fest. This year we even have pajamas for the dog!

Accutane Update: Day 10

Hey guys just a quick Accutane update! Today took my 10th pill out of the original 30 for the first moth. I still haven?t experienced any of the side-effects yet except for maybe a few pimples on my chin and upper lip, and a couple that hurt like crazy on the side of my nose! The only other thing I can say side-effect wise is that my chin is peeling very lightly; like if you look at it close up you can see a bunch of dead skin, but it doesn?t feel dry at all. Other than that my lips get a little bit dry if I don?t put on some chap stick, and my scalp is still a little dry, but none of these things are serious or concerning at all.

I?m still washing with Cetaphil every morning, and sometimes at night, if not just splashing it with some water. In the mornings I apply some SPF 30 called BurnOut (Which I definitely recommend) to my face that does a really good job of keeping my skin moisturized without getting it greasy at all; the only thing though because I?m tan it makes my face look a little pale and weird like I?m sick or dying. At night I?ll just apply some Cetaphil moisturizer or even just more BurnOut because it makes my skin feel good.

So far in these very early stages I can say that I am very pleased with how things are going! My skin definitely looks a lot tighter, firm, and even but in a very good healthy way. Believe me though it still has a long way to go, but my skin definitely looks like it has a lot less texture than it did 10 days ago so I am very happy with that! Also one more thing that I noticed since I started taking the Tane, was that I feel a lot colder in places where I used to feel normal or even warm. Whether it?s the Tane or not it?s nothing serious just a little weird I guess. So I hope you all are having a good one, and I?ll update you in a week or so!

Eating with the Seasons: Winter

*************************************************
Just as its natural to eat and drink cooling
things in summer, winter is the time to stimulate
your digestive fire with warming foods and herbs.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warming Foods and Herbs: Turnip, Rutabaga, Parsnip,
Sweet Potato, Butternut and Acorn Squash, Kabocha Squash,
Daikon Radish, Lamb, Chicken, Tempeh, Onion, Garlic, Scallion,
Ginger, Cumin, Fenugreek, Black Pepper, Curry Powder
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Balance heavy foods like meat and cheese with lightly steamed or sauteed
non-starchy vegetables like kale, collard greens, dandelion,
bok choy, cabbage, brocolli, cauliflower, burdock, mushrooms

Make heavy foods like beef or lamb "lighter" by cooking with
ginger and daikon, and/or in soup with your favorite vegetables.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In winter avoid cold energy foods that weaken your digestive fire.
Examples are cucumbers, melons, iced drinks, large amounts of salad.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An especially bad cooling food in cold winter is coconut water. Coconut water
is excellent in the hot weather because it is so cooling. But it is only
drunk in the hot season in South Asia, never, ever in cold or rainy weather.

Winter Miso Soup for Colds

A traditional remedy for winter colds is miso soup cooked with
fresh ginger and scallions. Its so simple.

Low boil 2 cups water with 5 slices fresh ginger root for 5 minutes.
Reduce to simmer.
Add 1 tbsp mellow white or red miso paste, more or less to taste
Add 3 tbsp chopped scallion, especially the white ends.
Add a dash of white pepper
Stir until the miso paste dissolves and simmer about 1-2 minutes.

If you want, you can boil root vegetables first and then follow the
above steps, daikon radish, burdock root, and shitake mushroom are excellent.

Think Vegetarian Chicken Soup!

Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain

Tired of gaining 5-10 lbs every holiday season? Here is something you can do.
Any healthy person can fast for one day. Try fasting for one day between Thanksgiving and Christmas and again between Christmas and New Year?s day to rest the digestive system and increase awareness and sensitivity to genuine food needs.
Drink as much warm water as you want, or spiced water (boil ginger, cardomom, clove, cinnamon in water). If you are weak, have a glass or two of heated milk of your choice (dairy, soy, hemp, almond). The next morning break your fast with a few pieces of fruit.

Vippassana Food Meditation

During the holiday season, from Thanksgiving through the New Year, there is a tendency to over-indulge in heavy foods and sweets. They are hard to resist, especially for office workers, who are faced with a barrage of candies and sweets strategically placed on the corners of co-workers? desks.

At the same time, many of us gobble down our food, barely experiencing what exactly it is we are putting in our mouths. How we eat is as important as what we eat.

Try this food meditation practice. It can be done with any kind of food, and is often practiced with a solitary piece of fruit (or chocolate!). Take this piece of food and place it in your palm. Consider it. Feel its weight in your hand, and notice its shape, color, and smell. Place the item in your mouth and begin chewing with care. Do not swallow. Let go of everything else in your mind and focus only on the small amount of food in your mouth. We are doing only what we are doing. In fact we are barely doing; we are being. Human being.

You are chewing a piece of food. Pay attention to the food?s flavor and texture. Pay attention to the subtle differences between the surface of the food and its inside. For example, how different does the skin of a grape and its pulp taste? Is the skin astringent? Is the pulp sweet and juicy? In a tangerine segment, for example, does it have seeds? Do they add a bitter note to the otherwise sweet experience? As you continue to chew, bring all your faculties of mindfulness to the experience?in taste, smell, touch, sound. Notice what comes up in your mind in relation to the food item. Notice thoughts; notice feelings. Notice what comes up and sit with it. Notice what comes up and allow it to pass without pushing it away or pushing it back down. Be there in the experience. Be awake to it. Doing something as simple as chewing one bite of food with awareness is the beginning of mindfulness. Now it will be easier to know exactly what it is that is staring at you seductively from that plate of M&M?s on the corner of your neighbor?s desk.

Lose 6lbs in 10 days

It's the new year, and I like many others, have gained weight over Christmas, and boy did I enjoy it!!

Now is the time to lose it, as I have to go back to India to shoot. I need to loose 6lbs, as that's what I have put on.

I have decided to do a 10 day detox, where I eliminate things like sugar, wheat, coffee, dairy, alcohol; and control wheat, fats and alcohol. I also will go to Bikram Yoga for 10 days in a row!

Today will be my 3rd day in a row. I have done 2 days in a row, and contoled the diet somewhat. I have been eating Porridge and a protein shake for breakfast, Chiken (Nandos, mmm), potatoe and veggies for lunch and an extra shake after the Bikram class, then a healthy meal which consists of some sort of meat or fish with veggies and the odd occassional treat.

So far, I have lost 3lbs, which I am really happy with, and I hope the other 3 comes off within the next 8 days.

Bikram Yoga is definitely an amazing sport. I am guessing I am losing around 800 plus calories per class. (I found a calculator on the net that asks for your weight and height and calculates the calorie expenditure of a Bikram class). It's a lot of calories, and the class is very hard, but the physical and mental benefits are unbelieveable. It melts away your stress, something I have had a lot of over the last few weeks, due to personal reasons, and it calms you and makes you respect your body and mind a lot more. You almost feel like a new born baby.

I will let you know my progress as I progress, for now I am enjoying it, even though it's tough, but nothing worth having comes easy!

On a lighter note (there is a pun there somewhere!!),  please do keep showing your support to my music as an independant, I need all your help, and download my new album. I hope you enjoy it, it's actually a great album to workout to, all the songs are up tempo and will keep you on track!
Download my album here pretty please! :-)

Matt Damon To Receive Joel Siegel Award At Critics? Choice Movie Awards

Hot off the presses, here’s an announcement about a special award that True Grit star Matt Damon will be receiving at next week’s Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Read on for more deets.
MATT DAMON TO RECEIVE JOEL SIEGEL AWARD
AT THE 16th ANNUAL CRITICS? CHOICE MOVIE AWARDS
AWARDS CEREMONY TO BE BROADCAST LIVE FRIDAY, JANUARY 14 AT
9:00 PM ET/PT ON VH1
(SANTA MONICA, CA - January 5, 2011) — The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) announced today that renowned actor and philanthropist Matt Damon will be presented with the fourth annual Joel Siegel Award at the 16th annual Critics? Choice Movie Awards. The ceremony will air live on VH1 on Friday, January 14 at 9:00 PM ET/PT.

Given annually, this special award pays homage to beloved Good Morning America film critic and BFCA member Joel Siegel, who lost his long struggle with cancer in June, 2007.
Matt Damon has long held a special place in the hearts of the BFCA membership. He won his first two Critics? Choice Awards 13 years ago, when he burst on the screen as the star and co-writer of Good Will Hunting. He has gone on to receive five more nominations, including last year for his work in Invictus. Damon is a worldwide box office superstar, thanks to such smash hits as Saving Private Ryan and the Bourne and Ocean?s series. This year, he played crucial roles in two films being honored at the Critics? Choice Movie Awards, as the Texas Ranger LaBoeuf in the Best Picture nominee True Grit and as the voice of the Best Documentary Feature nominee Inside Job, as well as starring in Clint Eastwood?s Hereafter and Paul Greengrass? Green Zone.
?Matt personifies the values celebrated by the Joel Siegel Award,? says BFCA President Joey Berlin. ?Among his many charitable endeavors, Matt?s work as co-founder of Water.org has inspired us to honor him. The profound mission of Water.org is to help bring a day when everyone on the planet can take a safe drink of water. Matt is also a founder of Not On Our Watch, which focuses global attention and resources to stop and prevent mass atrocities. He helps fight AIDS and poverty as a supporter of the ONE Campaign. He is also an ambassador for ONEXONE, a non-profit foundation committed to supporting, preserving and improving the lives of children at home in the United States and around the world, and a spokesperson for Feeding America, this country?s largest hunger-relief organization. Clearly Matt understands, as Joel did, that the true value of celebrity is as an enhanced platform to do good works for others.?
Counting down to the live premiere of the Critics? Choice Movie Awards, VH1 and MTV will air the 16th Annual Critics? Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet Pre-Show live on Friday, January 14 at 8:30 PM ET/PT. Covering the excitement of the celebrity arrivals on the red carpet will be co-hosts Tim Kash and La La Vazquez. The pre-show will also be available on CriticsChoice.VH1.com.
The 250 members of the BFCA, the largest film critics? organization in the United States and Canada, representing television, radio and online critics, selected nominees in each of 25 categories. The awards are bestowed annually to honor the finest in cinematic achievement. Eligible films were released in 2010. The accounting firm of Gregory A. Mogab tallied the written ballots.
Historically, the Critics? Choice Movie Awards are the most accurate predictor of the Academy Award nominations. All four major acting category winners at the Academy Awards in 2010 were first Critics? Choice Movie Awards winners in the same categories and were present at the January 15, 2010 ceremony to graciously give their first acceptance speeches of the awards season. The BFCA also recognized The Hurt Locker for ?Best Picture? and Kathryn Bigelow as ?Best Director,? making her the first female to win the award. The Hurt Locker and Bigelow also went on to win the Academy Award for ?Best Picture? and ?Best Director? but were both overlooked at the Golden Globes.
The 16th annual Critics? Choice Movie Awards, honoring the finest in cinematic achievement among 2010 film releases, announced its nominees on Monday, December 13, 2010. Final ballots will go out to the BFCA members on January 10, 2011 with the deadline for returning final ballots happening on January 12, 2011. For a full list of this year?s nominees and information about the show visit CriticsChoice.VH1.com. The site also offers VH1.com?s Award Season Twitter Tracker where users can see the awards show buzz that?s happening on Twitter in real time and Quick Critic, an opportunity to share short film reviews for a prize that includes a trip for two to next year?s Critics? Choice Movie Awards. Additionally, interviews with many of the acting nominees can be found on the BFCAs’ site CriticsChoice.com.
The 16th annual Critics? Choice Movie Awards is executive produced by Jesse Ignjatovic for Den of Thieves, Joey Berlin for Berlin Entertainment and Lee Rolontz for VH1.

M?A?C Peacocky Collection.

Two new M?A?C collections are out today. This one is Peacocky.  When I heard the name, I immediately thought peacock teal blues and green, but that is not only what this collection is about.

Arrogance or elegance? The showy display, the undeniably sexual spectacle, the iridescent irreverence…it’s awe-inspiring. We fetishize the exotic peacock as a symbol of extreme beauty, an act of elaborate nature, raging against everything simplistic. Peacocky fans out in a foray of intense colour for Lips and Eyes, exotic and sophisticated with a touch of ’30s F. Scott Fitzgerald glamour and mesmerizing metallic sheen. NEW Kissable Lipcolour combines full flash with creamy comfort. It’s molten, with elastomer technology that imparts a velvety, aerated feel without sacrificing shine. Light as a feather. Mega Metal Shadow gleams like chrome, with light-reflecting properties – yet creamy, crease-resistant, vitamin-fortified flexibility. Dramatic doesn’t even begin to describe the girl who knows she’s Peacocky.

I am excited for both the new Kissable Lipcolour and Mega Metal Shadow, if I dare say so.

The collection rundown:

Basketball Wives 2 Recap - Episode 3 - Crumbling Bookends

It’s always in restaurants that things get raucous on Basketball Wives. These women should save up and buy themselves a wrestling ring.

We begin exactly where we left off last time: with Shaunie, Evelyn, Jenn and Royce dropping by Gloria and Suzie’s lunch date. Obviously, conflict ensues. This show wouldn’t be this show without it:
Shaunie (with a little help from Evelyn, Jenn and Royce) versus Gloria (with no help from Suzie)
Hilariously, everyone immediately pulls up seats (and to be fair, Gloria and Suzie are weirdly sitting at a giant table that can comfortably fit four more people).

“We were just talking about you!” says Gloria, as though it weren’t a given. “Good things?” asks Evelyn. “No, not really,” says Gloria dryly. Ha. So we’re being honest, are we? Immediately, Shaunie follows suit and digs into Gloria’s seeming marital woes, asking, “Your relationship is perfect. What happened?” When news of your mortal enemy’s canceled marriage makes the media rounds, it must be nice to be able to rub it in her face in person. That’s definitely a perk of being a public figure, I imagine.

Gloria says she’s not telling Shaunie anything about her relationship because she doesn’t like her. Well, Shaunie doesn’t like Gloria, either. Perhaps they have more in common than they thought! Gloria wonders why Shaunie would care about her situation if that’s the case, and Shaunie says, “Because it?s so entertaining to me! That you?re sitting here! After your wedding date! Unmarried!” Gloria says she and Matt didn’t get married because they didn’t feel like it. Some days you feel like an exchange of vows; some days you don’t. Gloria says that she’s not going to pour her heart out to Shaunie and Shaunie says that it’s because she doesn’t have one. And to think that all it would take is a trip to the Wizard to straighten her out. Maybe he could pass on some nerve to Suzie, too.
Gloria assures Shaunie that she and Matt are still happy. Evelyn is not having this at all.

When I saw this, I thought, “Gah! One millimeter lower and Evelyn would have a lovely makeshift mustache.” And then Gloria shifted slightly…

…and made my wish come true.
Evelyn points out that Gloria said she and Jenn are jealous of her relationship. Glo responds, “And probably you guys are.” I think it’s safe to say that at this point, after a considerable Twitter beef but regardless of anything, they really, really aren’t. A rare miss, Gloria. Jenn points out that Gloria was talking about how perfect her relationship was and Gloria snaps back, “Please don’t talk.” Jenn listens and expresses herself through action:

Jenn wonders exactly what they’re jealous of: Gloria’s failure to walk down the aisle or her two kids “out of wedlock.” Jenn’s hollering like we’ve never heard before. It’s kind of a good look! It’s nice to know that she has passion somewhere inside of her. Meanwhile, Royce is mostly silent, but loving this…

Suzie soon gets up and leaves, only to interview that she?d had enough of the negativity, and ganging up on Gloria was not right. I’m sure Gloria really appreciated the silent, absent support. With it and $20, she could buy herself a baseball bat.
There’s more bickering regarding the particulars of Gloria’s canceled wedding and her refusal to divulge them. She implies that marriage yields sexlessness. I know nothing of the sort. Gloria says that she doesn?t care about Shaunie. Shaunie tells her to leave. “Yeah, I am getting? up out of here, you ugly-ass c***!? says Gloria.

Shaunie interviews that this language took her aback. “Who says the C-word?” she says. Scotsmen, mostly. Anyway, Shaunie follows Gloria out of the restaurant…

…like, all the way…

I love that in the midst of turmoil, Gloria had the composure to collect her leftovers. That kind of unshakability is hard to come by. Shaunie sees Gloria to Suzie’s car…

…and then knocks on the window as her final goodbye…

Shaunie interviews that through this, nothing was resolved and that it was a waste. Eh, not entirely: we got to watch it, at least. ?But at the same time, I think I should have smacked the crap out of her,? Shaunie laments. Well, we have seven episodes left in the season. Still plenty of time! Invest in a wrestling ring today!
Speaking of weddings that didn’t happen, Evelyn and Jenn walk by the store that was doing her dress before she canceled things with Antoine Walker. She says she “has to” go in, and then explains, “I just wanted to see the dress. I hadn?t seen it in over a year. Just was curious.” A whole year? She’s really missing out on crucial moments in garment-development. Before she knows it, that dress is going to be fully grown and starting a life of its own and she’ll barely recognize it at all. Jenn, with insight that seems a bit more grounded in reality, says that Evelyn wanted to go check out the dress to show herself she made the right decision. At the same time, this implies that Evelyn was to wear a pile of wet garbage and hot rags, which…

…she was not. Obviously. I don’t know, wouldn’t a nice dress make someone regret that she never got to wear it in public? Except up until this point, I guess? “I feel silly,” says Evelyn, though obviously not silly enough to scream at the cameramen to turn off their cameras and threaten them with bodily harm if they do not, like people do on some shows.

They talk about modifying it into an evening gown, which Evelyn says would be a “big step.” Wait, was Evelyn supposed to get married in this dress or to this dress? Jenn points out that Evelyn and Gloria now have something in common: they both own wedding dresses they didn’t wear. Ha ha? Evelyn wants this to be converted into a freakum dress and Jenn suggests that wearing it may just pick her up a husband.

Amen. And also: isn’t it kind of already a freakum dress?
We then see a short scene with Shaunie and her kids, who for the summer are staying just a hop, skip and a plane ride away from Miami, in Orlando.

She plays ball with them, at one point schooling a very young daughter in the particulars of basketball:

I love how adorably serious about her mother’s instruction Me’arah is. I hope Shaunie cherishes these years. They don’t last long. Before you know it, your children will be grown-up wedding dresses.
Then, we get a sad scene of Jenn alone in her apartment with only her giant earring to cling to…

We see shots of her holding her Blackberry in various places around her apartment.

She says she and Eric text each other “to avoid what’s going on.” That’s sad but also extremely modern of them.
We’re then introduced to Suzie’s new man, the “young, hot and strappin’” Jared Odrick.

Some men are cute, some are hot, some are handsome, some are fine and some are foine. Jared is foine.

As they share a dinner in prepared by a chef, he explains football to her. Didn’t she just say last episode that she wants to be a sportscaster, probably covering football? She apparently has a long way to go, as she thinks the length of a first down is 100 yards. He’s patient with her, so that’s nice. Jared is 22, which leads Suzie to call him “young, hot and irresistible.” The rose he presents her at the end of their date probably helps inform her opinion, as well:

While that’s blossoming, though, Jenn and Eric are wilting.
Jennifer versus Eric
He finally arrives home.

Here is a sample of their conversation:
Jenn: This is, like, wack.
Eric: What?s wack?
Jenn: Like, us.
Eric: I mean, come on, granted, look, whatchu want from me?
So, yeah. Communication isn’t their strong suit and it only devolves from there. He says it doesn’t even matter if he’s home or not, because she goes out every night anyway. She says she goes out every night because she’s unhappy with her situation. He tells her to get out, then. He says they not longer have an emotional connection and that she’s obviously not in love with him anymore. Jenn thinks that people in marriages fall in and out of love all the time. For, like, sport?

She knows she’s done all she can do. “How long do you drag this out?” she wonders. “I don’t,” says Eric, pointedly. Eric says she?s holding onto memories and the thoughts of being a failure, but relationships end all the time. He can sense the tension when they’re together. “We ain’t smilin’ anymore,” he notes. He’s got that right.

How succinct and devastating. Let’s don’t wait till the water runs dry, please?
He mentions multiple times the advice Evelyn gave Jenn last season to cheat on Eric. “You got these miserable females that they tryin? to give you some advice?” he says. But of course, that advice was not given in a bubble — it was in response to Eric’s infidelity, which could very well still be happening given that he hasn’t worn his wedding band in Jenn doesn’t know how long.

He says he lost it. “It” could mean so many things in addition to his ring right now. She says it?s pretty apparent. Again, “it” could mean so many things. He wants her to be more specific. The next thing. What?s the next thing? Moving on. “That?s fine with me,” he says. He asks her if she’s getting a lawyer and says she can have the apartment. She says they’ll take it one day at a time, but he doesn’t like that idea. Nonetheless, the scene cuts ensuring that they’ll at least be taking this one episode at a time.
Then, some Suzie activity.

She has her laptop out, working (on what?) at a cafe when Royce calls her to coordinate a meeting with Dwayne. Since Evelyn will be there, Suzie will “have to think about it.” Then, she meets with a “local Miami host” for lunch:

The host, Debra, tells Suzie to pursue her broadcast journalism degree / sportscasting dreams.

And so Suzie will. She ends their meeting with a near-wardrobe malfunction.

This suggests that Suzie’s broadcasting has viral potential, which really must be what you strive for as an on-air journalist these days.
Then, Royce and Dwayne frolic in botanical gardens, which Royce loves for the flowers but hates for the bugs.

Their six-month period of chastity has ended. They talk about what Dwayne wants. Apparently, it is booty. Luckily, they are able to control their hormones for the time being. Royce discusses their imminent dinner. She says Evelyn will have an attitude if Suzie goes (she doesn’t add this, but it’s quite possible that she’ll have an attitude if Suzie doesn’t go, as well). She assures him that Shaunie will like him, and that Shaunie’s the realest of the bunch. We shall see!
We’re treated to a brief scene of Gloria and Matt packing up their stuff for their move to California, on account of Matt being traded.

They talk about the other women on the show. Matt doesn’t like any of them (obviously!) but Gloria says she likes Suzie. Of course, now she’s getting away from most of them, with the exception of Shaunie, who also has a house in L.A. Gloria says this doesn’t affect her. Good thing, right? How much would things suck if it did affect her?
And then, we get to the final scene, which is not set up to be a point of tension, per se, but becomes one anyway. It actually complements the opening scene, which was also a fight in a restaurant. What gorgeous bookends!
Evelyn versus Suzie
Evelyn, Jenn and Shaunie arrive at the restaurant where they are meeting Royce and, for the first time, Dwayne:

Jenn interviews that Dwayne seems normal. So far so good! She asks if he has, in Royce’s words, “spread the hips” yet. “Have you f***ed?” is how Evelyn immediately clarifies. That is the finest, “How do you do?” that I’ve ever heard in my life.

“I’m satisfied,” is how Dwayne puts it. This is unsatisfactory to Evelyn, who counters, “What does that mean? You lickin? her p****?? Haha, Evelyn is amazing. Royce is finally made to admit that their sex fasting is over. In an interview she adds an embarrassed, “Hi, Mom!” Royce, you have a kid and your mom knows how that happened, since she’s, oh, your mom and all. She probably isn’t scandalized one bit.
Evelyn asks if Suzie is coming. Maybe! Shaunie thinks Suzie’s regular flaking is “just rude.” Some time passes and they receive their meals. Jenn thinks it’s rude that Suzie’s still not there. “She’s a f***ing bitch,” is Evelyn’s explanation. Then Suzie comes in, not acting like a bitch at all, probably to Evelyn’s chagrin.

As always, Evelyn cuts right to the point: “We were just letting him know how shady you are.” “Aw, I love you, too,” is Suzie’s response. “No, I don’t love you,” is how Evelyn hits back.

Royce asks Suzie if she wants to eat and Evelyn says she doesn’t, adding, “You need not to eat!? Harsh! Suzie tries to explain that she liked Evelyn, only to be cut off by Evelyn’s proclamation of not liking Suzie. “You run your motherf***in? mouth. That?s what you do,” Evelyn tells her. ?And you tryin? to be a commentator on TV. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You can?t even speak, bitch.?

To be fair, commentating is a great career path for someone who runs their motherf***in’ mouth as a matter of course. The speaking, I’d assume, would just fall into place. Evelyn then suggests that Suzie does nothing but collect child support. There is a lot of bickering. This time, Royce does not find it hilarious.

There is a brief calm and Suzie attempts to apologize again. “I f***ed up!” she says.

She says she was trying to be too nice to too many people and that she genuinely misses her friendship with Evelyn. She wishes she could turn back time if only to preserve that friendship. Evelyn’s response? “Whatever, we don?t need to be BFFs it’s all good…Me and you will never be friends. I don?t care how much you apologize. I put that on my daughter’s life.” Compassion! She leaves.

Shaunie and Jenn follow her, and then Royce, Dwayne and Suzie all decide to leave as well (hopefully giving Evelyn enough time and space so as not to even broach the force field of her wrath). “Well, you met everybody!” Royce tells Dwayne. Indeed. And he got a free show with his meal, to boot!
