Florence Welch: The Florence and The Machine Singer Goes Designer

The indie-gone-mainstream songbird trades in her quirky vintage look for couture.

The British singer-songwriter Florence Welch was recently nominated, along with her band Florence and The Machine, for a Best New Artist Grammy, and has migrated from indie darling to mainstream songbird.

Her quirky style can be described as seriously hippie, with some grunge mixed in. The former pre-teen skatepunk and art college student grew up singing songs by the likes of Dusty Springfield, before coming up with her own musical style.

Florence & The Machine on David LettermanHer look is just as eclectic as her musical influences, and she's known for her theatrical on-stage ensembles. Florence and the Machine has steadily gained popularity since releasing their debut album, Lungs, back in July 2009. As the lead singer for the seven-piece band, Florence morphed into a sort of spectacular reincarnation of fashionably notorious rockers like David Bowie and Janis Joplin, thanks in part to pre-show visits to local second-hand boutiques.

We can't help but notice that Florence has been rocking out in straight-from-the-runway designer pieces lately. She wore this nude ruffled crepe georgette jumpsuit and embroidered jacket from Elie Saab's Spring 2011 ready-to-wear collection during the band's performance on David Letterman, on December 16th, 2010.

She wore an Emilio Pucci sparkly minidress from the line's A/W 2010-2011 collection for the band's Saturday Night Live appearance on November 20th, 2010.

The flame-haired front woman was photographed wearing All Saints at the brand's Meatpacking District store opening. She was decked out in Chanel for the label's Spring/Summer 2011 show during Paris Fashion Week in early October.

Florence isn't always designer-clad, however. Her Mulberry leopard cross-body bag, high-waisted shorts, and muted yellow button-up, bring to mind festival gear more suitable for the 90s.

Celebrities usually wear their wackiest attire at the annual MTV Video Music Awards, but this September, Florence walked the red carpet in a sophisticated gold lace Givenchy haute couture gown from their Fall 2010 collection, complete with an exposed-front zipper.

We love Florence's wardrobe, and hope she keeps mixing retro pieces with her designer originals, both on and off the stage.
