Video Debut: Taylor Swift?s ?Back To December?

There has been widespread speculation in the media that “Back To December,” the second single of Taylor Swift’s triple platinum Speak Now album, is about her failed relationship with Twilight hunk Taylor Lautner. Regardless of that rumor’s veracity, it’s pretty clear from both the song and the new video — directed by Yoann Lemoine, who also shot Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” — that Taylor is super bummed about something.
The song, which peaked at #6 on the Billboard 100, is almost certainly the most maudlin of Swift’s young career, and the video does everything it can to match that sensibility. It begins with a chisel-cheeked young man wandering around the desolate, snow covered grounds of his high school in a depressed state; he sits on the bleachers with his head in his hands and mournfully kicks at the snow. He’s so depressed, in fact, that he forgets to wear a hat. That’s a surefire way to catch a cold, mister!

Meanwhile, Taylor is acting similarly downbeat, only she has the common sense to stay in her warm (and pretty spacious) home. However, despite her temperature controlled environs, she can’t escape the haunting memories of the way she treated the song’s subject and it begins snowing right there in her bedroom and kitchen. That’s when the “Back To December” metaphor turns literal, with romantic angst manifesting itself as soap flakes snow falling indoors. It’s a smidge on the heavy handed side and, in an unfortunate twist, doesn’t seem to represent that Taylor is going “Back To December.” Rather, it seems as if she’s stuck in December, which seems to us like a pretty silly mental state for a 21 year-old multimillionaire to find herself. Here’s hoping that spring comes sooner rather than later for her.
